Kindra Crick’s work explores the idea of how we perceive the world around us; as Anais Nin wrote, “We don’t see things as they are; we see them as we are.”   Crick explores this idea through encaustic painting and print-making by mixing impulses from both sides of the brain: logical and random, methodical and intuitive, textual and visual. Her grandfather was a prominent molecular biologist and neuroscientist, while her grandmother painted the female form and introduced her to painting at a very early age. From this beginning, Crick’s perception of the world has been continuously influenced by an improbable juxtaposition of scientific inquiry and visual expression.

Combining text with anatomical and scientific imagery, Crick balances her urge to explain, measure, and search for absolutes, with the more spontaneous and nuanced gestures of experimentation, play and intuitive response. Her recent encaustic paintings consist of layered ink drawings, text, oil and beeswax.

Crick was involved with the visual arts department while attending Princeton University, where she graduated with a degree in Molecular Biology. She studied painting with Philip Hanson at Ox-Bow, an artist residency in Saugatuck, MI. In 2006, she received a Certificate in Painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Portland, Oregon.

As a Pacific Northwest native,  she enjoy the lush spaces between the mountains and the sea. She has been living and working in Portland, OR since 2006.
